The 12-hour CE requirement that catches CSL holders late

Massachusetts requires Construction Supervisor License holders to complete 12 hours of continuing education every two years. The most common failure mode is the timing.

Every two years, every Massachusetts CSL holder owes the Division of Professional Licensure 12 hours of continuing education. The state's stated cause for the requirement is keeping the license aligned with current building code, energy code, and lead-paint and asbestos work practices.

What's tricky about it

The 12 hours run on YOUR license cycle, not the calendar year. If your CSL renews October 15, your CE clock runs October 15 → October 14 two years later. The state will not remind you when the cycle starts.

The most common failure mode: a contractor takes 12 hours in their renewal year, assumes that satisfies it, and gets caught the cycle prior because the hours were taken in the wrong window.

How to fix it cleanly

  • Look up your CSL expiration. The cycle is exactly two years backward from that date.
  • Plan to clear all 12 hours by the 18-month mark — leaves a 6-month buffer for makeup if a class doesn't post.
  • Save certificates of completion from the provider; DPL audits a small percentage of renewals annually.
